Two separate counts
- Schengen days don’t use Cyprus days, and Cyprus days don’t use Schengen days.
- Each count is 90 days in any 180-day period, worked out the same way.
At the border
- The EES is not used in Cyprus. Passports are still stamped by hand.
- UK travel advice says to make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit. If a stamp is missing, show evidence such as boarding passes and ask the border guards to add the date and place.
Visas
The EU’s common visa rules don’t apply in Cyprus, which issues visas under its own national rules. A valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen country can also be used to travel to Cyprus, but visas and residence permits issued by Cyprus are not valid for the Schengen area.
ETIAS
Cyprus is one of the 30 countries that will require ETIAS from visa-free travellers once it starts. The EU hasn’t announced a start date. See ETIAS.
The north of Cyprus
UK travel advice says the Republic of Cyprus authorities count time in the north toward the 90-day visa-free total. If you enter the Republic of Cyprus through the north, for example through Ercan Airport, the authorities consider it illegal entry.
Overstaying and longer stays
UK travel advice warns that if you overstay you could be questioned on exit and refused entry for up to 5 years. For a longer stay, check with the Cyprus authorities, such as the Cyprus Migration Department.
Questions
Does time in Cyprus count toward my Schengen 90 days?
No. The EU says time in Cyprus is calculated separately and does not count toward the 90 days in the other countries.
Do Schengen days count toward my Cyprus days?
No. UK travel advice says visits to other EU or Schengen countries do not count toward your 90 days in Cyprus. The two counts are separate.
Can I use my Schengen visa in Cyprus?
The EU says a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen country can also be used to travel to Cyprus. It doesn’t work the other way: visas and permits from Cyprus are not valid for the Schengen area.
Does time in the north of Cyprus count?
UK travel advice says the Republic of Cyprus authorities count time in the north toward the 90-day visa-free total.
Do I need ETIAS for Cyprus?
Once ETIAS starts, yes: Cyprus is one of the 30 countries that will require it. It isn’t running yet.
