Is Gibraltar in Schengen?

No. Gibraltar stays outside the Schengen area and the EU. But since 15 July 2026 its short-stay rules follow Schengen’s, and UK travel advice for British nationals says time in Gibraltar counts toward the same 90 days in any 180.

Last checked 3 Nov 2026 against the official sources below.

What changed on 15 July 2026

  • The UK-EU agreement in respect of Gibraltar started to apply provisionally. Gibraltar remains outside both Schengen and the EU.
  • There are no longer entry and exit check booths at the land border between Gibraltar and Spain.
  • At Gibraltar’s airport you go through two sets of checks: Gibraltar’s own immigration control, and Schengen entry checks by the Spanish authorities, including the EES. ETIAS will apply once it starts. After that you can move freely into Spain and the rest of the Schengen area.

How Gibraltar days count

WhoWhat the sources say
British nationals No visa needed for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Time in Gibraltar counts alongside time in the Schengen area toward this limit (UK travel advice).
Other visitors who don’t live in Gibraltar The Government of Gibraltar lists, among the Schengen entry conditions checked at the airport, not having been in Gibraltar or the Schengen area for more than 90 days in any 180-day period.
Visa nationals A Schengen short-stay visa is needed. You can no longer apply for a UK visa to visit Gibraltar.
Gibraltar residents with an ID or civilian registration card A special regime: 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area, and time in Gibraltar doesn’t count toward it.

The calculator counts Gibraltar days from 15 July 2026, when the new arrangements started. Days in Gibraltar before then are not counted.

Other points from UK travel advice

  • Your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Gibraltar or the Schengen area.
  • To stay in Gibraltar longer than 90 days, you must register with the Gibraltar government’s Department of Immigration and Home Affairs.
  • British-Irish dual nationals travelling on an Irish passport are treated as EU citizens: no 90-day limit, EES or ETIAS.

Questions

Does time in Gibraltar count toward my Schengen 90 days?

From 15 July 2026, UK travel advice for British nationals says yes: time in Gibraltar counts alongside time in the Schengen area. The Government of Gibraltar describes the same 90-days-in-180 condition for other visitors who don’t live in Gibraltar.

Is there still a border check between Gibraltar and Spain?

Not at the land border. Since 15 July 2026 the checks happen at Gibraltar’s airport, and the port if needed. Once through, you can cross into Spain without immigration checks.

British nationals don’t need one for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Nationals who need a visa for the Schengen area now need a Schengen short-stay visa to visit Gibraltar.

The Government of Gibraltar says holders of a Gibraltar identity card or civilian registration card can spend 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area, and time spent in Gibraltar does not count toward that.
