Questions

How many countries are in the Schengen area?

29: 25 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania were the last to join, on 1 January 2025.

Is Cyprus in the Schengen area?

Not yet in full. Cyprus takes part in Schengen cooperation but still has internal border controls. Time in Cyprus is counted separately, with its own 90 days in any 180-day period.

Is Ireland in the Schengen area?

No. Ireland opted out and runs its own visa and border policies. Days in Ireland do not count toward the 90/180 limit.

Do Monaco and San Marino count?

Yes. UK travel advice says the 90 days in any 180-day period covers the Schengen area including Monaco, and the Schengen area and San Marino together.

Is Andorra in the Schengen area?

No. But you have to travel through France or Spain to reach it, and days there count.

Does Gibraltar count toward Schengen days?

From 15 July 2026, UK travel advice for British nationals says time in Gibraltar counts alongside time in the Schengen area. If you travel on another passport, check with the Gibraltar authorities.
